Automated Equinox/iPhone tethering to hotspot.

I’m new to this forum and just purchased my Equinox EV in late August.

My free trial of On-Star is over and I created an automation through the Apple Shortcuts app to automatically turn on my phone hotspot when it’s Bluetooth is connected to my equinox and turn off my phone hotspot when the Bluetooth disconnects from the car.

Really not a big deal but I thought it was cool that I don’t have to leave my phone’s hotspot on all the time.

The equinox picks up the hotspot through its WiFi connection quickly.

I’ve attached pics and can answer any questions if anyone is interested.

The only part of on star that should have expired is he emergency features...not all on star.

This "hotspot" is for you and 5(?) passengers to connect to the cars wifi hotspot and pull data from it. Mine came with a 1 month/3GB trial. With cheap cell phone data plans this is an expensive way.

If you want access to in vehicle apps such as Spotify after the 3 month trial (5 if you registered a credit card), you need to sign up for the full OnStar program or piggy back off your cell phone. I haven't found a way to automate this with Android, but this method with Apple should help.

10 months later here and I still have all my in-car data (notwithstanding a broken comms unit for 1.5 months), and I was told in no uncertain terms by a rep at OnStar (i.e., not my dealer) that this would be true for eight years.

What in the world are they doing over there at GM. 😠

Cool - thanks for posting. We’ve got a longer plan with our 2024, but this could come in handy later.
