Is $30,000 Equinox EV price a "False Hope" or just a "Lure"?

1700 Views 75 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  Steverino
So Bolt is going bye-bye because it was not a "money maker" for GM. Timing interesting with the Equinox EV replacing the Bolt end of year. But base model for the Equinox EV is $30,000 and it certainly has more bells and whistles than the departing Bolt, plus it can go 300 miles on battery power.

So 1LT/LT base models won't be offered to buyers until Spring of 2024 which is almost a year off, yet one has to wonder if $30,000 sticker price will hold come next year? And will GM make much of a profit off LT trims? GM claims it was losing money on Bolt so one has to seriously wonder if the same problem could surface next year on upcoming base Equinox EV, if production costs increase or GM quarterly profits slip?

Ford, Rivian and other EV makers have jacked EV prices at the risk of buyer backlash. So one has to wonder if GM is playing the lowball (lure) price game offering Equinox base at $30,000, only to jack up price next year before actually deliveries? Obviously right now there's a demand for EV's priced in $30,000 to $35,000 range yet very view to pick from. So "Kudos" to GM for putting on paper they plan to sell the base Equinox at $30,000. But that estimated price quote is May/2023. Not March/April 2024? So anyone here feel $30,000 base price is "locked in stone" for Spring 2024 or just a LURE?

Glad I got a trade-repurchase of a fully-loaded 2023 EUV Premier (and a big check) for my 2020 EV Premier or I'd be counting the days for the Equinox EV RS3. I already lived that experience a couple of times, the first time waiting for Chrysler to take orders in late February 2000 for the 2021 PT Cruiser and the other time going "all-in" with a non-refundable deposit on the 3-wheeler vapor-car called "Elio." $1,000 down the crapper and all I got was a lousy t-shirt (and a stupid bumper sticker). Oh, yeah; the 15-month wait for the trade-repurchase to happen got a little tense at times, when my dealer kept selling my 2022 or 2023 EUVs before they finally came through.

Some infotainment things, yes. There's more we don't know than what we do know at this point. Here's what I know based on current info for cars that have Super Cruise as an option (I expect the Equinox trims to be same or similar):
  • SuperCruise 3 years Super Cruise Connected Services† plan free. †After 3 years requires a Chevrolet Connected Services plan,
  • Connected Vehicle Plan does not include emergency or security services. Service varies with conditions and location. Data plans provided by AT&T (more on that below).
  • Super Cruise vehicles are connected to emergency services. (Despite bullet #2 it seems)
  • Connected Services vary by vehicle and model and require active service plan, working electrical system, cell reception and GPS signal. (This is the "Duh! CYA)
The OnStar site has an "OnStar Connected Vehicle Plan" @$24.99/mo. ($300/yr) with
  • Wi-Fi® Hotspot* with available data.
*Service varies with conditions and location. Requires paid AT&T data plan. Vehicle must be on or in the accessory position for Wi-Fi to function.
  • real-time navigation and traffic updates*
*Connected Navigation and Real-time Points of Interest (POI) only available on properly equipped vehicles. Map coverage available in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada.
  • Connected services*
*Connected services vary by vehicle model and require active service plan, working electrical system, cell reception and GPS signal. Does not include emergency or security services.
  • In-Vehicle Apps*
*Available on select 2017 model year and newer GM vehicles with compatible hardware. Requires active service plan and paid AT&T vehicle data plan.
  • Google built-in compatibility*
*Google built-in services are subject to limitations and, availability may vary by vehicle, infotainment system and location. Select service plan required. Certain Google actions and functionality may require account linking. User terms and privacy statements apply.
  • Available Alexa Built-In*
*Functionality is subject to limitations and varies by vehicle, infotainment system, and location. Select service plan required. Certain Alexa Skills require account linking to use.
An OnStar chat rep told me:
  1. What are the ATT data plan details? "The data plan is thru AT&T and paid through OnStar: $25/month Unlimited, $15/month for 2GB and $200/year for unlimited. "
  2. Is there a less expensive Connected Vehicle plan for Super Cruise? "No. "
  3. Would Google Maps and Assist be covered under the Connected Plan's Google compatibility feature? "If you have a Google built in map navigation , you just need to have a data plan for updates." (So just a data plan but not a connection plan? I would not stake my life on that answer, but something to ask about when the time comes).
My conclusion based on the above is the subscriptions covering Super Cruise, google Maps, apps and a bit more will be about US$500 to $600/year. Without SC, maybe $200/year for a data plan covering Maps and Assist. Of course what GM rolls out with the Equinox could be different, but I'm likely in the ballpark.

Right now, GM says $25 per month for SC after the first 3 free years. My plan, if I still have my EUV in another 2.5 years, is to NOT renew it, but hope the option helps my resale or trade value. I just don't use it enough and it cuts out too often. Maybe they'll go "SiriusXM" and offer the plan in 12-month subscriptions at 1/3 the price if you call to cancel it. Or, NOT. (That said, I'd keep SiriusXM if they'd just drop the price to $6 plus taxes and fees per month, instead of playing the silly "threaten to cancel game" every 6 to 12 months.)

Those features require online components and constant upkeep.... It's not just hardware. So yes at least for Super Cruise it is understandable.

for map updates that doesn't justify that cost, system/firmware/operations/bug updates should be part of the initial package purchase same as with most any consumer electronic

I get the SC charge. Speed\maps updating, probably also updating the vehicle's software itself, etc.

I don't get why Android Auto is part of this, when they could give the option to connect to a phone as well.

This is not a specific Chevy complaint... I started looking at other cars (mainly ICE) and they all have something like that, especially for remote start.

I have EvoStart. $400 one time payment, connected to my phone. I can start the car from anywhere in the world, and control the locks and the AC as well. So if they could install a 4G unit in my car for a one-time $400 fee, everyone else can too.

I was thinking along a similar line, Lance. Get it, see how it goes while free. Hopefully at resale in year 15 or so, it helps the car sell.

I work hard to avoid debt, so no car lease/loan payments for me, Gats. I've said it before, software subscription plans often work by unlocking features based on plan tier level. The features are there in the code, but unless your plan allows it, you don't have it. To say it should be free because GM is a non-profit organization would be incorrect. Plus for the long term you WANT the company to be invented to update and upgrade and make the system better. You want the company to be profitable.

system/firmware/operations/bug updates should be part of the initial package purchase
Where are you seeing that software code/bug updates are not, Gats?

What I found included was
  • Wi-Fi® Hotspot*
  • real-time navigation and traffic updates*
  • Connected services*
  • In-Vehicle Apps*
  • Google built-in compatibility*
  • Available Alexa
I didn't see anything that said you must have a subscription for software/bug fix updates. Software updates are either free at the dealer while under warranty, free is a safety recall, or free OTA if the car has the capability for the issue. My 2017 Bolt EV has OTA but it is very limited/rare. My understanding is the Equinox EV is designed to offer a more powerful OTA capability via the Ultifi system, but—par for the course at this point—we are lacking details.

I would actually be more interested in paying the US$500-$600/year under the OnStar Connection plan required for SuperCruise and the other services if it also included software updates for things other than infotainment.

For example, my Bolt EV's iBoost brake system developed an annoying rapid tapping noise while in park or at low speed while my foot is off the brake. There is a software update for that. Free under warranty (mine is not) or a dealer install cost of about $300 out of warranty. If that update could be done OTA as part of the Connection plan I'd be happy. No dealer trip, plus I'd be getting the other services above. I'd be even happier if it was done free as part of the OTA capability. :)

I’m confused about pricing. If super cruise only needs a connected service plan, then isn’t that only $25/month which also includes all the data? And if GM is giving 8 years free of Android Automotive, how will that work? That should mean that the data plan is included for 8 years. Otherwise AA won’t work. I would really love actual info from GM.

I think an earlier interview a spokesperson stated super cruise required data not necessarily a data plan. They siad there would a $25 super cruise plan for those without the connectivity plan from OnStar (which I am assuming would only give super cruise data access and not provide any infotainment data access) and a $15 plan for those with the data connectivity plan from OnStar ($25).

See the details above which come from the OnStar links I provided, Peter. After 3 years, Super Cruise goes dead unless you get 1) an OnStar Connection plan and 2) an ATT Data Plan. This (SuperCruise) has nothing to do with the 8 years free Google Maps and Assist. Google Maps and Assist are not the same as Android Auto. AA and CarPlay will not be supported other than for calls and text messages.

After the free 8 years of Google Maps and Assist, you'll need a subscription or they die. That subscription may just be a data plan. Or not. We are discussing something that has not been officially rolled out yet. That happens with the Blazer EV first, then the Equinox EV.

in summary, if you don't get SuperCruise, you may be looking at $25/month at year 9 for a data plan (at a minimum) to continue with Google Maps/Assist.

If you get SuperCruise and continue it, at year 4 you'll need a Connection and a data plan. My assumption is the data plan will also cover the Google Maps/Assist starting year 9.

That's my understanding as of now given what info is available to me.

Feel free to contact OnStar and get your own answers of course. :)

That's not what the OnStar SuperCruise website seems to say, TKEV. I provided their text and links above. Now, it's possible OnStar will be changing its plans, fees, requirements when the Blazer EV and Equinox EV rollout without the AA/CP support. I'm just going by what is in writing now on the OnStar websites and my chat with a rep.

I think these plans are going to change with the new EVs. I looked at those sites and all onstar says is you need a connected vehicle plan with also includes vehicle data, in car apps, remote services, maps etc. so to me it is only one plan. $24.99/month. Which should be included for 8 years? That’s why I think this will all change. But like everything here, we are all speculating. I guess we need to keep busy somehow.

You and I both ended up with loaded EUVs compliments of trade repurchases, and checks too. So, we can be patient about the Equinox EV. I'm hoping with a decent trade in value, plus the $7500 tax credit, that an upgrade to an AWD Eq. won't be too hard on our pocketbook. It's going to have to be at least as well equipped though. My wife is already spoiled by the sunroof and ventilated seats. I'm spoiled by the Super Cruise. I see you like the 3RS, we would probably go with the more laid back 3LT.

Pure speculation on my part, but it feels like there's two different streams here:
  1. OnStar Data
  2. AT&T Data
and how this sorts out is that OnStar data provides a basic connectivity package with smallish payloads. It can manage status messages and commands, authenticate services and handle some kinds of routing data. The AT&T data is for bigger data: wifi connectivity in cabin, dashboard streaming, map data (both semi-live for dash nav/Google Maps and probably batched for SuperCruise "Mapped roads" mapping)

Subscribe for software updates and such, fine. You try to charge me to be able to turn on the heated seats that currently reside in my car we are going to have problems.

Also, Ford just updated BC pricing to $800 per year. SC will likely be similar before too long.

Yes, I think BMW took a bullet on that idea EVolution and none of the other manufacturers want to revisit that idea.

That's why I think the focus will primarily be infotainment services and SuperCruise. Stuff that requires OnStar connectivity and data. Mobile apps would be part of that scheme while the key fob would not. A route planner with charging suggestions might be part of a subscription, while opening the charge port would not.
