Is there car tracking through the MyChevrolet app?

My dad is 79 and we are considering a 25 or 26 Equinox EV. Previously he had leased a Ford Explorer and one thing I liked about the Ford app is that it had vehicle tracking - I could open the app and see where he was. He has since had a heart attack and I think that knowing his location (yes of course he is aware) would give me even more peace of mind. So in the Chevy app can you track the location of the Equinox EV and does it require any kind of subscription?

Yes, as long as you have the OnStar service (which I believe is for 8 years), you should be able to press the Map icon and the vehicle's location should show on the map. Now that is only if the car can connect with it's 4G or 5G service. If he is in a basement of a parking garage, then the map might only show his last location, for example.

In MyChevrolet (app), click on Maps, then click on the Vehicle icon. The map will then re-center itself around the vehicle’s last known location (could be from 10 minutes ago, even if the app falsely claims “Just now”!). All Equinox EVs come with a free 8-year subscription to OnStar, which is the networking service used by MyChevrolet.

You may need an OnStar subscription at some point - unclear if the 8 years of basic connectivity includes the vehicle location feature. But you might want OnStar for other reasons in your case - such as automatic crash notification, etc.

With the mobile app, the location is often laggy or out of date. Works better if the vehicle is parked versus driving.

Having gone through something similar with a relative, I would more recommend an iPhone and iWatch with medical capabilities. With something like that you also have fall detection and abnormal heart rate, as well as the ability to for your dad to initiate a more detailed reading if something feels off - with cardiologist level information content.

Yeah I had noticed with the Ford app that sometimes it wasn’t super accurate but mostly it was just knowing if he’d left my aunt and uncle’s and was on his way home.

He tried a smart phone (iphone) and had a hard time with it but maybe we will try again.

If tracking his location is the main goal, then you can just use a mini GPS tracking device like AirTag or Tile. He does not have have a smartphone. Just explain to him what it is and how it tracks his location and ask him to carry it with him when he goes somewhere, like put on a key chain.

It works for kids, pets, or laggages.

If he's OK with this and you don't mind the constant reminders (In my experience) then an apple airtag is a fabulous idea. Course, you need to be in the apple environment to use this approach.... But you could get him a decent flip phone and an airtag on his keys and everyone would be happy...

My dad has Parkinson's, and his tremor wrecks havoc on his smart phone use. When my brother upgraded from a flip phone dad basically just stopped using a phone.... He gets frustrated using the iphone, rightfully so since it does random stuff because of his tremor.
