Self Sealing Tires vs. Run Flat Tires (Self Supporting, Auxiliary Supported)

Depending on the trim level of your Equinox EV, the car has 19" wheels, standard tires and a tire inflator kit, or 21" wheels with self sealing tires (no repair kit). It does not have run flat tires.

So, what's the difference between a traditional tire, a self seal tire and a run flat tire?

Traditional Tires
The traditional tire on the 19" Equinox EV wheels will deflate if punctured by a nail, screw, etc. Depending on where the puncture is located and how large it is, the tire inflator kit can be used for a temporary puncture seal and re-inflation to get you someplace for a permanent repair or tire replacement.

Self Seal Tires
The self seal tire on the Equinox EV 21" wheels will not deflate if punctured by a nail, screw, etc. Depending on where the puncture is located and how large it is, the tire will seal the hole. A sticky, viscous sealant layer fixes tread damage up to 5 mm in diameter. It traps the air inside, keeps the tire inflated and your car mobile. It works instantly, even if the puncturing object becomes dislodged. Depending on the picture size and location, the self seal is a permanent fix. The tire should get inspected to determine if it needs a plug or interior patch. Self seal tires can be repaired following the manufacturers instructions, but some tire shopsbrefuse because it's a bit messy and takes time to do it right.

Run Flat Tires
The Equinox EV does not have run flat tires. Run flat tires are like traditional tires, but are designed to be driven on even when the tire has lost all air due to a puncture. They are referred to as self supporting tires. There are two different technologies used, one uses a much stiffer sidewall for the tire preventing it from riding flat, the other uses a ring of supporting material inside the tire between the tire and the wheel. Like the stiff sidewall approach, this prevents the tire from riding flat when air is lost.

Regardless of which your car has, it's not a bad idea to get and carry a tire repair kit that enables you to plug holes. A tire patch kit runs about $7 or so if you want to have one just in case.

Walmart, Amazon, auto-parts store all carry them. They are inexpensive and typically have a - handle rasp to clean/abrade the hole, another used to insert the plug (a saturated cord), extra plugs, some goop. You'll want to carry a needle nosed pliers, a small blade to cut the protruding cord, a towel, some gloves, maybe a plastic sheet to sit on.

A simple "Slime" brand kit is about USD$7

You can also get one about double the $ that comes in a plastic container and includes a plier and cutoff knife.

Since you've posted that specific kit a few times now, seems like an appropriate thing to mention.
Sure, just an example of an inexpensive kit and I have the picture so reuse and recycle :) You can spend up to $30 or more on tire repair kits. If there's one you prefer, feel free to post it, JG.

On the other hand the cheap Slime kit has 4.7 out of 5 stars on Amazon with over 12,600 reviews. That's not a guarantee someone can't break the handle, but probably an indication of OK performance at a low price. Many will accept something that's OK but not great if the price is low enough. Like lack of motor bay interior trim on the 20225 base model Equinox EV LT. :)

Ours didn’t come with the tire inflator kit , just the tow threaded rod
The 2024 2RS came with 21" wheels standard, Redacted. 21" have self-seal, no inflator kit.

Steverino, it sounds like you've had a flat tire already??
No, but this subject comes up from time to time. The was a recent thread where people kept referring to the Conti SelfSeals as run flats no matter how many times I corrected that misinformation. I did have a puncture of my Bolt EV's self seal Michelin tire about 6 years ago. The seal seal worked, I only noticed the nail when rotating my tires. Discount Tire was happy to repair it following the Michelin instructions. So I know the self seals can work and I know they can be repaired despite a few claims to the contrary.

I had a tire repair kit in the car but there was nothing short of replacing the tire that would make the car drivable.
I stumbled on this $50 GlueTread sidewall repair kit, LookMaNoBrakes. I have not used it but it seems impressive for sidewall repairs on low speed, lower pressure off-road vehicles. So, psi of 40 or less, speeds under 20? 30 mph? The patches are meant for temporary emergency use not a permanent fix. Shelf life of the kit is 2 years.

From their GlueTread FAQ
  • "GlueTread products are not approved for on-road use." Probably because it will fail at higher speeds and longer drives?
  • "The type of damage that the patch repairs affects the answer to this question. In proper testing environments, GlueTread patches were found to be able to hold pressure up to 40 psi. For minor damage, (like a small puncture from a sharp object), users can expect 40 psi pressure to hold. If repairing a larger slice in the tire, the capabilities of the patch will depend upon the size of the puncture and how effectively the patch is applied."
So it seems this is applicable to lower tire pressures, lower speed, fewer miles than a spare. But may perhaps work in some cases if those are kept in mind. If my choice was nothing or this, I'd be tempted to try this, keep the pressure at 38 psi and drive 20 mph to a tire shop.

I had no idea the EQEV had and engine and an engine bay.
lol. I suspect more may understand what "the engine bay" refers to than "the motor bay" but I fixed it to "motor" to eliminate any confusion. Thanks GFW :)

I wonder why that would be needed? How would one tire's failure lead to damage on the other three? Perhaps the stiffer sidewalls experience wear over time just like tire tread and a new tire would have different handling dynamics leading to a potential safety issue? I did find this:
"Most run-flat tires are designed to run for a maximum of 50 miles at a speed of 50 mph after a puncture. This means that if you get a flat tire, you will need to replace it or repair it as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the tire or the wheel." So once punctured, the run flats acts like a built-in donut spare with the same 50 mile/50mph limitations. Exceed those limits and the tire fails.

This highlights how handy it is to have the tire pressures displayed on the Equinox EV DIC screen. I have mine set to display permanently so I can see if there is a pressure loss whether gradual or sudden and take action sooner rather than later.
