Waymo vs. Tesla: “ The major thing I realized after riding in the Waymo for even a few minutes is how much better it is than Tesla FSD”

It is a lot better for the consumer because you can just sit in the back and relax. With Tesla’s FSD, you are responsible every second for watching the car. This is no problem on the interstate, but in the city, it is a lot of mental stress. Although I find FSD to be less stressful than driving manually on the highway, I find it more stressful than just driving a car in the city. Why? Because I have to do a lot more with my mind. I have to assess what the safest course of action is at any time and I have to assess what the car is doing. Then I have a split second to decide if they are close enough to each other or if what FSD is doing is dangerous and I should disengage. That is a lot more work than just driving.

Waymo is owned by Alphabet (aka Google). It appears that Waymo is the winner of the self-driving competition.

Importantly, Android (the basis of GM's EV infotainment system) is also owned by Alphabet (Google).

This may soon result in GM licensing Waymo's self-driving navigation system for use in GM vehicles.

You heard it here first! :cool:

The big difference is Waymo is geographically limited. You can't use it while driving between cities, for instance. FSD can be used this way. Tesla is shooting for a full self-driving system while Waymo, Supercruise, Blue cruise, etc., are all limited to previously mapped roads and highways. This makes Tesla's FSD far harder to implement. Also, as it currently stands I suspect Tesla's FSD would pass an on-road driving test in every State in the US. It might also pass this test in most European countries as well. Think about this, if FSD can pass these tests and it's not allowed to drive by itself why are we allowing teenagers to drive when they pass these tests?

@obermd If I could buy a Waymo self-driving vehicle with a navigation package only covering my Metropolitan Statistical Area, that would be totally awesome and I would buy immediately. Add to that the very likely future availability of navigation packages covering other areas.

A couple of points:
1. Cameras by themselves are limited. Even the best digital cameras have focusing issues.
2. Cameras don't have windshield wipers.
3. $400 Cameras on Teslas don't have FLIR (night vision in infrared spectrum)
4. Updated mapping is good combined with updated GPS. See marine navigation using GPS and continuously updated nautical charts.
5. If you drive a car or navigate a boat, you know that human vision has problems differentiating between bright lights at a distance, and weaker lights closer to you. Add hundreds of light sources, and vision is not adequate.
6. A combination of visual cameras, radar, lidar, gps, flir, altometer, and accurate mapping is a logarithmic order of magnitude better than vision alone.
7. Waymo is better.
